Travel Diary of Japan - Ray Kinnane
Kyushu This is the most southern of the main island group, enjoying very temperate weather at its southernmost tip. This part of Kyushu, Kagoshima and Sakurajima is called the Naples of Japan, due in part to the climate, but mainly due to the presence of a large active volcano that constantly showers the city and countryside with volcanic ash. Everything in Kagoshima is covered in a layer of gritty ash. It grinds in your teeth constantly, especially when you are eating. It covers cars, it blows in your eyes, it even covers the fruit on trees if they are not kept in paper bags when growing.
