The Northern island of Hokkaido has the least population density of the main islands, with migration from the main island only becoming significant during the Meiji modernisation period (1860's). Agriculture is very different in Hokkaido to the rest of Japan, in that the farms are much more broadacre planting, due to the availability of suitable land. This makes it a major supplier of food to the rest of Japan, famous for its potatoes, wheat crops, dairy produce and seafood. One of the great pleasures in Hokkaido is to visit one of the numerous 'onsen' hot spring baths, soaking in piping hot pure mineral water before tucking in to a delicious dinner of crab and other local specialities. When visiting Hokkaido, crabs can be selected and purchased at the many seafood stores along the coast, and delivery arranged anywhere in Japan for the next morning, where they arrive fresh, expertly packed in ice in special styrene containers.
