The landscape of Hokkaido can be very European in appearance, as can parts of the cities. During the modernisation of Japan through the Meiji period, experts from many European countries were bought in to advise on industry and agriculture. Some of the design features of Hokkaido's cities, such as these canals in Otaru, show their influence.
