Volcanic activity is still very evident throughout Japan, and nowhere is this more evident than in Hokkaido. There are many, many sulphur blowholes, hot mud springs, and freshwater lakes that are warm enough to bathe in at the height of winter. One of the great pleasures in Hokkaido is to stay in one of the many hotels that have an in house 'onsen', or piping hot mineral spring bath. There is an incredible variety of these mineral baths, all said to be able to assist in the treatment of various medical conditions. Some people put the longevity of Japanese down to these onsen.
