Kanazawa, on the Japan Sea side of the main island of Honshu, was a strong Samurai centre in feudal times. Many Samurai and Geisha houses still remain as tourist attractions. The straw fences lining the narrow laneways keep the snow off the stone fences, minimising the damage that the melting snow can do to the earth mortar binding the fences together.
