Nagasaki always seems to fall second place to Hiroshima as an atomic bomb monument, but it is worth visiting on many other grounds. The influence of Europe and China is easily seen here, as well as the effects on the city of early Christianity. Because Nagasaki was so far from the place where the laws were made, Edo, trade with China and Europe continued even after it was decreed that Japan would be closed to outsiders. It is a city with a strong above-ground tramway system, which means that moving about the city by public transport lets you see it, unlike much of underground-serviced Osaka and Tokyo.
