The only display election advertising allowed in Japan are these standard boards, where each candidate draws a numbered square on the board, and places their photo in the same square on each board throughout the electorate. These are complemented by a constant barrage of cars fitted with loudspeakers, with beribboned, uniformed female assistants waving out of the windows, loudly broadcasting the virtues of their candidate. The candidate sits in the car waving, wearing white gloves to symbolize 'cleanliness' of the non-corruption kind. The noise factor in quiet towns goes up enormously at election time.
