Each local village, town or community throughout Japan has an annual festival, where they carry a portable shrine from street to street, containing the patron god of the community, who will hopefully impart his blessing on them. People who have moved away from their community to live elsewhere, often return each year for the festival, which helps to maintain a strong sense of community amongst the Japanese.
