a. Cherry blossom. b. Baby photo with cherry blossom. c. Walkway, Daigoji. Cherry blossom season starts in the warmer south, passing through Kyushu in mid March, and reaching Hokkaido by May. It is photographed here at its peak in the old capital of Kyoto in early April. Cherry blossom tourism is so important in Japan that the position of the 'cherry blossom front' advancing through Japan is given on the television national news each night throughout the season, so families can plan their pilgrimage. These photographs were taken at Daigoji temple in Kyoto city. In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideoshi, the military dictator of Japan at that time, had a wildly extravagant, and famous, tea party in these temple grounds. Many of the trees that currently surround the temple buildings today would have been in bloom for Toyotomi's party. |
