b. Lotus leaves.

c. Fortune telling boxes.

Kyoto is one of the most visited places in Japan, both domestically and by international tourists. It has many beautiful old temples and shrines. It is a city where much of the history of Japan can actually be seen. When visiting shrines, it is customary to purchase a fortune slip from the priests present. The red boxes in the photo automate this process, dispensing your fortune slip of paper on the insertion of a coin. Technology is not new!
